How to choose a Quran translation

Translations convey meanings in the translator’s language. Choose an edition that is appropriate for your reading needs, and check its attribution and explanatory notes.

Identify the edition

Look for the translator or publisher name and, when available, the edition information. Two editions in the same language may use different vocabulary or explanatory approaches.

Read explanatory notes

Some translations include translator notes. Open the notes for context and identify them as explanations attached to that edition, not part of the Arabic Quran text.

Compare without rewriting

Use the comparison tool to read up to three existing editions of the same verse. You can also select a second language where translation data is available.

For deeper study

Read the original Arabic alongside the translation, and consult the available tafsir, Quranic word meanings and verse links when you need more context. This site does not generate replacement translations or change published translation texts.
